Facts about the Red Gem
Seeking to distinguish the much improved Model D Gem from its predecessors, Edison dressed it up with elegant paint and ornamentation -- plus a strikingly vivid horn. The Model D Gem can play BOTH 2 and 4-minute cylinders, one of the significant improvements incorporated into this model. Our original Edison flower horn has been professionally repainted with the translucent red finish characteristically associated with this model. Some people have mistakenly assumed that the flower horn sold with the Gem Model D must have been "maroon" to match the exact shade of the machine -- NOT TRUE! The horn in most instances was a cheerful, bright, translucent red. It took us years to discover the technique of refinishing original horns with the same iridescent quality they had when new.

The entire instrument has been meticulously restored, including the correct shade of dark red (often known to collectors as "maroon") paint and precisely accurate decorations. The hardware has been re-nickel-plated to give this machine a fresh-out-of-the-box air. This is a top notch, top-to-bottom restoration.
Attention to detail is evident, right down to the little "4-minute-2" marking that indicates the proper position of the plunger that controls the 2/4-minute gear change. It is simple to switch between the two types of record, and either can be played if the Model K reproducer is selected (see below). Furthermore, we have scrupulously restored and adjusted the mechanical components. The machine runs remarkably smoothly and quietly. The Gem may not be a large instrument, but this one is perfectly suited to playing records -- strong motor, even-running and reliable.
The little bentwood cabinet can be used to cover the mechanism when not in use.
