EDISON STANDARD MODEL D PHONOGRAPH

The story is very interesting -- Edison introduced  improved 4-minute records at the end of 1908. The idea was to quickly replace the older "2-minute" cylinder records, but it was necessary to make Phonographs that could embrace both formats, manifested in the Model "D." The evolution of the Phonograph included a striking change from the early "straight" horns that were supported IN FRONT of the instruments, to the elegant and graceful Cygnet horns (as above) that were delicately suspended ABOVE the mechanical works. Our original Cygnet ("swan's neck") horn has been meticulously restored to reflect its original factory appearance.

The fancy gilt decorations on the motor plate are original and in excellent condition. More elaborate embellishment than previous models was part of Edison's plan to make the Model D instruments appealing.

To educate the public about the new 4-minute records, and the particular reproducers required to play each type of record, this helpful notice was affixed to the inside of the cabinet lid.

Beautifully preserved, spotlessly clean, completely restored, tuned and adjusted. Not a speck of dirt or grease. Our spic-and-span Edison is a far cry from the filthy, messed-up trash you see available in online auctions. The neat, compact oak cabinet can be closed to keep out dust.
