HMV "PORTABLE"

What makes this instrument so interesting in the USA is the fact that nothing quite like it was ever created in North America. Victor sold its popular Victrola "50" -- a portable in a sturdy wooden cabinet, similar to this, but the 50 had no significant horn opening such as this machine does. In fact, this instrument resembles a cross between a Victrola 50 and a Victrola IV. Its many sophisticated elements make it in many ways better than a 50.

Let's start with the "sound modifying" doors that were employed on larger models, with handy recessed knobs to keep from being snapped off as the machine was carried. "Portable" talking machines usually had no accommodation for volume control. Note the two "buttons" located left and right above the doors.

These buttons release the lid of the cabinet, VERY smooth design! It makes the "suitcase" latches of a VV 50 look crude by comparison.

Shifting to the interior appointments -- the needle cups have an ARTICULATED cover to keep needles from spilling as the machine is moved. Closing the lid, CLOSES THIS COVER. When the lid is opened for playing, this cover springs up and out of the way.

The proper soundbox, rebuilt and playing masterfully.

The original decal inside the lid.

The specially-designed crank stores inside the lid when not in use.

Original "English Brown Oak" finish. Plays great, looks great. The HMV portable is a "cross-over" instrument, combining the convenience of mobility with NO sacrifice of sound quality or technical superiority.
