EDISON STANDARD PHONOGRAPH

The Model C Standard was originally sold in 1907. That year the Model C was rapidly introduced to comply with a patent court ruling. Since the Model C proved to be a brief prototype of the Model D machines released in 1908, it is considered a rarity and highly desirable by collectors.
A couple years after purchasing it, the original owner decided to "update" his machine by adding all the new features that were available at the time -- it was a period when technology was developing quickly. This was near the end of the life cycle of the Edison external horn cylinder Phonograph. Having begun in around 1890, the Phonograph was about to undergo big changes as the second decade of the 20th Century dawned. The evolution had been complete, from the early "straight" horns that were supported IN FRONT of the instruments, to the elegant and graceful Cygnet horns (as above) that were delicately suspended ABOVE the mechanical works -- and, finally, the horn would be concealed INSIDE the cabinet after 1913.
The Cygnet horn has been carefully restored, and decorated by our artist with hand painted cabbage roses in the manner of the times.

The quarter-sawn oak cabinet has its ORIGINAL factory finish and decal.

We show here how the mechanical works were upgraded to allow the instrument to play EITHER the older "2-minute" cylinder records, or the newer (introduced 1908) "4-minute" records. On the left is the auxiliary gear cluster which governs the 2-4 min. gearing. At the center of the upper works we see the improved "horizontal" carriage, holding an Edison Model B diamond stylus reproducer. With its large diaphragm and genuine diamond stylus, the Model B produces the best quality sound available from an Edison reproducer. The sound is clear, crisp and bright. The Diamond B was designed to play only 4-min. Blue Amberol records. However, we are also offering a special Model O reproducer option (see below), which will allow the buyer to play BOTH 2 AND 4-min. records. All grease, grime, gunk, goo and grunge has been removed. Take a look at the wretched, misrepresented junk you find on eBay and you'll understand why our instruments are the best.

This instrument is beautifully restored, squeaky clean, completely tuned and adjusted. Not a speck of dirt or grease. Our spic-and-span Edison is a far cry from the trash you see available in online auctions. Everyone wants to try to save money by looking at eBay, but remember this -- any money you think you save will be lost, and then some, correcting the mistakes and omissions of online amateurs. Buy once, buy right -- from phonophan!
